It has become such a big business to purchase storage buildings which others abandon that more than one popular television show has been dedicated to the subject. Millions of viewers tune in every week to watch the auctions which decide who will acquire the abandoned rooms. If you know what youre doing, and if you get lucky, you can walk away with thousands of dollars - or more - simply because you were the highest bidder at the auction. If you dont know what youre doing, though, you can really get stuck! Bid too high and you can sink a lot of money into someone elses junk. If youre interested in getting into the business of buying storage buildings, and selling the contents for cash, here are a few tips: Generally, there are quite a few people who show up to bid on abandoned storage rooms. With so many people bidding, a person can get caught up in the excitement, and bid way too high. Dont resign yourself to winning no matter what; be smart and you wont get stuck with a truck full of trash! At a storage building auction the bidders are not allowed to touch any of the items in the room. The door to the room is opened and the auctioneer will usually give the crowd a couple of minutes to look inside. You are not allowed to enter the room so what you see is what you get. However, there could be hidden treasures in boxes, bags and buried underneath the piles of other things. Its a guessing game! One thing you can look for, as the door to the room is opened, is old furniture. Even if the furniture looks beat-up dont turn away just yet. People who store old things often have more old things. As we all know many old things are worth a lot of money. A room that features several old things which are visible could very well contain boxes full of collectibles. However, just because something is old doesnt mean its worth a lot of money. It can be helpful to have some general knowledge about the difference between worthless old things and antiques worth money.
Guessing games can leave you with a building of junk for which you paid big money. Never "guess" that there are valuables. Bid only on what you can actually see inside the room. So, if you take a quick look, you see things that might bring you a couple of hundred bucks once theyre sold, make your top bid a couple hundred bucks.
Another thing to look for when viewing a room is luxury items. For example, if you see a boat motor in the room that hints that the previous owner of the room likely had, once upon a time, some disposable cash. People with disposable cash often keep high-dollar items in a storage building. If you see a building full of trash bags you might want to think twice about purchasing that room. Trash bags often are filled with clothing, pillows, linens and similar things. Not to say that these things have no value at all but youll have a hard time making your money back if you end up with nothing but someones old clothing and bedding. If youre the highest bidder on a storage room you should know that you usually have only 24 hours to clean out the room. No matter what treasures - or trash - are inside its up to you to completely remove everything. If you plan to rent a truck keep the fee for that rental in mind when deciding how much you should spend on the room. Also, have someone along with you that can help you load and unload the items. Buying storage rooms is fun, and can sometimes produce a rewarding find, but it can also leave you broke and owning a lot of junk. Youll learn as you go along, but with this guide, you can get a head start on the other newbies who will be attending the auction, too!
