If your child attends school you can count on one thing: he or she will be coming home with lots and lots of Valentines. Valentines Day is very popular amongst young kids and they love trading the sweet cards with their classmates and friends. At the end of the day they can accumulate quite a few cards. If choosing cards, filling them out and exchanging them isnt enough excitement theyll enjoy themselves even more when they make a cute magnetic cd Valentine holder to display the cards.
Let kids choose an old cd that they no longer listen to or even a DVD that is scratched. The cd or DVD will become the base for the card display. Cut a piece of cloth, felt, or decorative paper to cover the cd. If kids have a large valentine they can even use it to cover the cd. Or, they can use the front of a large Valentines Day envelope theyve received. Covering the cd is not pertinent and kids can make the card holder using the cd or DVD as-is.
Use a button magnet to make the cd magnetic. Attach the small, round magnet to the center back of the cd. The magnet allows enough room between the cd and the fridge so that you can attach the actual holders of the cards. The magnet you choose should be larger than the hole in the center of the cd or DVD. Purchase a pack of miniature clothes pins. The pins are found at any craft store and some department stores which feature a craft department. They come in a pack of many and are very inexpensive. Although you can use regular size clothes pins for this craft the Valentine card display will not hold as many cards. Since miniature clothes pins come in various sizes, and since regular clothes pins are extra large, it might be necessary to glue a second button magnet on the back. If, when finished with the project, the cd card display wont lay flat on the fridge, just glue a second magnet on the back of the first magnet. Start by turning the cd face down on a flat service. Use hot glue - or another adhesive - to affix the mini clothes pins to the cd. The clothes pins should be placed to where the mouth of the clothespin is facing the outer edge of the cd. Glue them, even spaced, all the way around the cd. As stated before youll be able to affix much more small pins than large ones. When viewing the front of the cd you should not be able to see the clothes pins. While gluing them on scoot them back so that the mouth of each pin is about a half-inch away from the outer edge of the cd. If youre using large pins, and theres not enough room to scoot them that far back, consider gluing a piece of gathered lace around the edge of the cd, to conceal the pins. Open the mouth of each pin and place a valentine in each one. Halfway around youll have to turn the valentines the opposite way, so that they arent upside down at the bottom area of the cd. Place the valentine display on the refrigerator to display the cards. There are any number of things you can do to decorate the valentine display. Glue on hearts, paper cupids, or even valentine stickers. You can also use magnetic sheeting to create a totally different look each year. Cut two circles of the flat magnet sheet which youll purchase at any craft store. Affix one piece of the sheeting to the front of the cd and use the other to create a picture. Cut an image from a magazine - or even cloth - and stick the image to the second sheet of magnet. Each year you can create a new image to stick on the cd valentine display. Your kids will love exchanging valentines but they dont have to come home and throw them in a drawer. Let them make a valentine display for their cards and itll become the best Valentines Day ever!
